  • Max Remote Connections

    Hi,

How many remote connections can be made to Windows 2008 R2 ?

in our scenario, three users need to access the same server simultaneously but only two active sessions seems to be possible. Can we increase to one more session ?

Was this possible in win 2003 server?

    Regards,

    Re: Max Remote Connections

You will need to add the Remote Desktop Services role and buy licenses -- 2008R2 is limited to 2 (two) remote connections otherwise.

IIRC 2003 allowed 2 remote plus the console (which could be remote) so cheated its way around the limit.

Do users really need remote access, or just access to resources?

        Hi,

They need to take remote. I think going for ts licensing will be the best option here.

          Hi,

Do we have per user based ts licensing in win 2008R2 ?

Also, i heard we have a grace period of 120 days for 2008 server. So, Can we use more than two connections by just adding the Terminal services role for the said grace period ?

Yes, you can have user licensing for your server CALs

Yes, you can use the RDS (TS is SO 2008 ) Role for evaluation purposes for 120 days, but you won't get away with it twice as IIRC some registry settings are left behind even if you remove the role

                Re: Max Remote Connections

Technically, you could have one of them use the /admin switch for mstsc to enable a 3rd connection to console 0.

What are they actually doing though? Do they really need to connect to the desktop on the server to do it? I would suggest just giving them remote management rights through something like System Frontier. Then you can have as many people performing tasks on the same server as needed.

The server is in a remote location and the appliaction development team want it to be accessed from a branch location. They want three concurrent users to login work for the project.
