  • Help on copying issue in Win 2008 R2 64 bit

    Hi Guys,

I need your help if anyone has had the Invalid MS-DOS function when I'm trying to copy out a .mdf database file. It is a big file about 5Gb.

I even tried to zip it up but received an error, "Error reading file".

Top of my head, this file may be corrupted. However, I still need to try to copy it out for some level of basic recovery.

Any ideas? I've heard of Boot USB/DBD like Bart or whatever's out there. OR any ideas or suggestion what I can do.

    Thanks in advance.

    I would run chkdsk first?
    cheers

Given the file size, I hope it is on NTFS!
But a good question -- confirm it is being copied TO an NTFS format device (FAT32 had --IIRC-- a 2Gb limit

          FAT32 had a file size limit of 4GB - 1 byte.

Would point to the OP's problem if they were copying to an external USB key though

            Hi All,

            Thanks for your replies.

I too thought about the NTFS partition issues... but that wasn't the case. Everything is NTFS.

So, I did what Andy suggested ... do a chkdsk. And it worked. Something so simple but yet it flew over my head.

Ran chkdsk /R ... took a while but windows did recover the bad clusters. So, now its to check on the files integrity.

            Thanks again guys.
