  • KMS Activation (Server 2008 R2 Standard)

    Hi,

I have a physical server which I unable to activate the OS (server 2008 R2 Standard) on ... I have checked the following:
    • Attempted to activate the OS (several times).
    • Verified the product key as being the correct one for Server 2008 R2 Standard.
    • Verified that the server can telnet on port 1688 to the KMS server
    • Established that the specific patch (KB968912) for activating server 2008 R2 from specific OS’s has been installed on the KMS server.
    • Searched the net for any specific solutions and found none (apart from the KB968912 one which, as far as I can tell, does not appear to be the issue).

Anyone got any other ideas I can try?

    Keke

Have any servers activated ok? Usually, you need to wait until 5 servers have connected to the KMS server and they will then activate. So all attempts to activate have been via the KMS route? Are you using an Enterprise license key on the Windows 2008 R2 server and KMS key on the KMS server? Also, worth using the VAMT 2.0 tool to review activation.

      Open Command Prompt
      >> C:
      >> CD \windows\system32

Set KMS machine name to KMS server:

      >> slmgr.vbs -skms <KMS Server IP>:1688

Key Management Service machine name set to <KMS Server IP>:1688 successfully.

      Activate OS:
      >> slmgr.vbs -ato

      Product activated successfully.

      Sorted

Your KMS server should be found automatically so check your DNS records are avalable an correctly registered in AD.

BTW you can also log on to the KMS server and install VMAT and you should be able to activate the servers from there.
