    Server 2008 Upgrade - x64 Hardware / Processor

I am needing to perform an in-place upgrade for the OS from 32-Bit Server 2008 Std SP2 (already installed on 64-bit hardware)
    to 64-Bit Server 2008 R2 Std SP1.

Since the server is already 64-bit hardware - I would like to confirm if this OS upgrade should be straight-forward or whether I am looking
at the possibility of having to back-up data and perform a clean install for the 64-Bit version. I know a clean install would be required if going
from x86 hardware to x64 hardware.

You can't perform an in place upgrade from a 32bit version of Windows to a 64bit version of Windows. You'll need to build a new server and then transfer/migrate the roles, services and data from the old server to the new server.

      Thank you for the reply.

A clean install is better than an upgrade any day of the week.
Looks like another server rebuild is on the agenda.

      Thanks again.
