  • Print Server migration 2003 to 2008 R2

I'm trying to migrate a 2003 printer server on a domain which currently shares over 100 printers used throughout the company. The printers are mapped through directly from each PC that uses them. What I would like to is to create a new 2008 R2 server on the same domain, add the sam printer mappings and create the same share nameson that server. Then bring the old server down, reset its computer account in AD and rename the new server to the old server's name. Is there a reason why this approach may not work?

I did the same thing. But, if I recall correctly, installing the additional print server on the Win2008 DC was all that was required - it picked up the printers from the 2003 DC. Since that time I have removed the print server from the 2003 DC and everything is still working fine.

The only difference between our setups is that I only had 4 or 5 printers on the server.
