  • Domain controller Rename

Let me first explain the situation.

    DC01 - - Windows Server 2003 - Physical
    DC02 - - Windows Server 2008 R2 - Virtual

I'd like to decommission DC01 due to old hardware and the fact that I want raise the functional level. However, most of the clients (thin clients, servers, etc) that have static IP addresses only have (DC01) set as the DNS Server. This poses an issue with just decommissioning DC01.

I'm wondering if there is a way to change the Hostname of DC02 so that it is seen as DC01 and change the IP address to

I know there is a way, but will it work with Domain Controllers is the question.

DC02 has all the FSMO roles and both are GC servers.

These servers being domain controllers, this is a very delicate operation and a lot can go wrong.

Has anyone gone through something similar?

    I welcome all comments.

    Thank you.
