  • Server 2008 R2 SP1 - DFS Issue

If this post needs to be moved to another forum - please let me know.
DFS Installation was OK on DC1 - no issues.
Using local DNS Integrated AD on DC1 and third party DNS.

When trying to create a new domain based Namespace from within the DFS Management console
I get "The namespace cannot be queried. The RPC server is unavailable."
As you can see below - I have tried several options provided from Microsoft's Technet forum -
and have not been able to resolve this issue yet.

    DC1 - Server 2008 Enterprise SP1

Forest Functional Level: Windows Server 2008 R2
Domain Function Level: Windows Server 2008 R2

I verified the following services are running and have stopped/restarted these services:
    DFS Namespace Service
    RPC Service

    IPv4 only - (Not using IPv6)
NSLookup resolves OK to the hostname and IP

Note: there are NO entrys in the registry for the DFS Namespace at the following location:

Only the following path - with no subfolders

DNS Forward and Reverse lookups are correct with correct Host(A) and PTR records.

DFS is only installed on one server - the Primary DC (DC1).
When running the DFSUTIL command on DC1 with the /PKTINFO switch I get the following output:
    1 entries...
    Entry: \\sysvol
    ShortEntry: \\sysvol
    Expires in 506 seconds
    UseCount: 0 Type:0x1 ( DFS )
    0:[\\sysvol] AccessStatus: 0 ( ACTIVE TARGETSET )
    1:[\\sysvol] ( TARGETSET )
    2:[\\sysvol] ( TARGETSET )

    1. Does anyone possibly have an idea on what I can try to resolve the error message:
"The namespace cannot be queried. The RPC server is unavailable." when trying to create a namespace?

    2. Is there a way I can remove the entries for SERVER1 and DC2? I double checked and DFS is not installed
on these machines - but may have been in the past.

    Any input would be appreciated.

      Re: Server 2008 R2 SP1 - DFS Issue

Microsoft's suggested fix of editing the hosts file did not work.

To resolve the issue, temporarily change the static DNS IP for the DC to point back to itself using the
loopback IP: instead of pointing to the third party DNS server. (I waited 15 to 20 minutes for DNS to update).
Create the Domain Namespace and then change the DNS IP back to point to the third party DNS.
This allowed me to then properly create the DFS Namespace Folder and related Folder Targets -
which requires DNS to resolve hostname to IP.
