  • After SP1 Install i have no shares

    Just finished installing SP1 for Server 2008 R2, all went fine other than i can't access any shares using a UNC. When using \\server from clients or on the server i get the following message;

    Windows cannot access \\server

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.

    Error Code: 0x80070002
The System cannot find the file specified.

I've also tried with the FQDN and the ip and i get the same message. I've disabled the firewalls on the server and client and still have the issue.

I'm lost at what to try now!

How about access via IP or fqdn?

Have you checked that the shares still exist?

As per the OP i still have an issue with IP or FQDN.

Double checked the shares still exist.

Also when creating new shares on the server (not using the advanced sharing option) i get a message saying your folder can't be shared yet it does actually create it.

I should also point out that i've disabled the firewall on both client and server.

Just done a reboot and have the following in the event viewer, unsure if there related or not.

The winlogon notification subscriber <GPClient> took 97 second(s) to handle the notification event (CreateSession).
The WinRM service failed to create the following SPNs: WSMAN/SERVER.school.local; WSMAN/SERVER.

        Additional Data
The error received was 8344: %%8344.

        User Action
The SPNs can be created by an administrator using setspn.exe utility.

also bear in mind the error message isn't "The path cannot be found".

Still having this issue but i now have a bit more information.

When pinging the server name it show's the correct IP address.

When using net view \\servername i get the correct list of shares.

Still when going to run and \\servername or \\ipaddress i get the system cannot find the file specified. This is when i do it from the server or any clients.

I've disabled all GPO's and did couple of reboots and i'm still having the issue.

            this is driving me nuts!

Re: After SP1 Install i have no shares

I've plugged in a laptop that wasn't in this domain (was in a workgroup) and that can browse the shares.

I think it's some sort of policy that's causing this.

                Did you resolve this?
