  • Windows Server Backup - Failed - Due to Shadow

    Hi All,

I am really confused about this, and this is the first time playing with the Backup on 2008 R2.

So after week or so, I have been happily backing up System Reserved and Local Disk (C
today I add F:\Profiles to the Backup Schedule, it fails.

"The operation to back up the volume was stopped before the operation started running."

    Event Log:
The backup operation that started at '‎2012‎-‎04‎-‎30T09:44:41.647000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348249'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

But exploring the Disk Management, I have noticed something strange about the F drive. (Well I think so anyway)

    So,
By going to Shadow Copies Tab on F:
(by right clicking, F:\ Properties, and 'Shadow Copes and settings...)
    Volume:
    F:\
    Storage Area,
    Located on this volume:
    \\?\Volume{39......}\
    Use Limit: 95386MB

    But I noticed
\\?\Volume{39......}\ IS THE System Reserved partition.

and when I click on the 'Located on this Volume', drop down box,
    only
    \\?\Volume{39......}\
    C:\
    E:\

    Shows, and no F:\

    So I can't select F:\

    How can I resolve this?
or is it, I need to trash the disk and start again...

(Even though I just moved Roaming Profiles from old server to this server )

Many thanks, if any solutions available...

    Pete

Re: Windows Server Backup - Failed - Due to Shadow

    vssadmin list shadowstorage

will show you what shadows are setup where.. you can then adjust them accordingly

also, WSB won't like backing up a volume to itself..
normally you need to exclude the volume you're backing up to

I am not sure how to adjust them, (with using what command, etc)

Also, I am backing up System Reserved, C: and F: to E:
then E: gets backed up to a remote server.

But I am not understand how this all works nor how to configure it, as I am getting
Error: Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage
file or other shadow copy data.

      Many thanks

Re: Windows Server Backup - Failed - Due to Shadow

        Ok,

Now I found something really weird.

So F: is a TB hard drive,
In 'Computer' it's recognised as 931GB, 917GB free.

But in the 'Disk Management' (the list)
        Volume: New Volume (F
        Laout: Simple
        Type: Dynamic
        File System: NTFS
        Status: Healthy
        Capacity: 200MB
        Free Space: 180MB
        % Free: 90%
        Fault Tolerance: No
        Overhead: 0%

        This is the graph list,
        Disk 2,
        Dynamic,
        931.51GB
        Online
        Partitionl:
        New Volume (F
        931.51GB NTFS
        Healthy

Is this why it's all confused? and theres no space left for shadow copy? because disk management is mis-reporting?

        C: is 465GB
        E: is 931GB
        F: is 200MB

Ahhhhhh, I think I need to trash the disk and start again...

        Would this help this issue?????

        Many thanks

can't hurt if you have nothing on it.
