  • Domain users not being registered in DNS

    Setup
    --------
    1/
1 windows server 2003 Enterprise R2 PDC (AD integrated DNS)

    2/
1 windows server 2008 Enterprise Replica DC

    3/
Win 7 & Win XP domain clients

4/ Router with DHCP that defines this subnet.

When a domain client logs on its IP is not registered automatically in the DNS.

What I find is that I have to check a box in "Advanced TCP/IP settings" of the network connection. The setting is "Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration". Only then will the domain client register in the DNS. Is there a reason why it would not if this is unchecked which is the default. See attached image.

    Thanks.

From the DHCP server on the router.

Why not the DHCP server on the server???

If you can move it over to that it will automatically update DNS for you.

I had preferred the dhcp server to be provided by the router. Is that what is causing the problem? To have the dynamic registration feature I would need to use the windows dhcp server on the server?

Yes they are registered on the domain.

Yes it could be causing the problem and yes if set DHCP will automatically register clients.
