  • AD Integrated DNS. Missing DNS Event Log on R2 servers

Hello everyone. I have an annoying issue here where I can't get the DNS event log on my 2008 R2 Domain Controllers but they work fine on my 2008 (non R2) servers.

Some background - About a month ago we upgraded two Server 2003 Domain Controllers to Server 2008. Everything went smooth honkey dory. Now we would like to replace the 2008 servers with 2008 R2. So I added two 2008 R2 DCs to the domain.

DNS is working correctly I just get an error bringing up the event viewer on the R2 machines.

Server Manager - Roles - DNS Server
    I get an error:
One or more logs in the query have errors
DNS Server - Access is denied

    Also if I go to:
Server Manager - Diagnostics - Event Viewer - Applications and Servers Logs - DNS Server
    I get error:
Event Viewer cannot open the event log or custom view. Verify that the Event log service is running or query is too long. Access is Denied (5)

Sure enough if I browse to: C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs\
The file "DNS Server.evtx" is missing on the R2 machines but they exist on the regular non-R2 DCs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I would like to get the issue resolved before decommissioning the older non-R2 servers.

I will start overhauling this issue by checking permissions on event viewer first. Your user account may not have enough permission to browse events. Check DNS event logging is enabled from DNS console. Keep me posted with your findings

      ahmer_sahab, thanks for your response.

I'm not sure what you mean by permissions on event viewer. Do you mean the service or the log file? I'm not sure how to check the event log service permissions but the DNS log file simply doesn't exist on the R2 machines so there are no permissions to check?

My user account has Domain Admins and Exnterprise Admins groups.

On the DNS Console I've verified that logging is enabled, "All Events" is selected.

      Thanks!

Thanks ahmer_sahab. I don't think that is my case. I've compared those registry settings between my 2008 servers (where the logging does work) and the 2008 R2 servers (that don't work) and they look the same.

          Anyone have any other ideas?

No, not from the R2 machines.

Seems like DNS service is corrupted on server.
If possible, Reinstall DNS on your Windows 2008 R2 Machine.

Ok, I had to wait until I could schedule some downtime but that's exactly what I was going to try anyway.

I uninstalled DNS, then reinstalled DNS. Then the event log within the DNS Management Console started working. The Event Viewer within Server Manager did not. At least not at first. Then I changed the permissions on the Windows/System32/winevt/Logs folder - Rebooted and then it worked there too!

After this worked on the first server, I repeated with the 2nd R2 server and got the same results. Weird! But whatever, I'm happy! Thanks for your help.

                    I am glad it worked
I also experienced same problem in my test lab with Windows 2008 R2 DNS
After reinstalling DNS , The error just disappeared
Thanks for updating with your findings
