  • Issues migrating from a 2000 server to a 2008 server

    Hi All:

I'm a newbie and hope someone can please help me out.

I've been migrating a server 2000 box to server 2008. Everything seems to have gone pretty smoothly until now. Here's the steps I've completed:
    - Ran apdprep/forestprep on 2000 server
    - Ran adprep/domainprep on 2000 server
    - New server TCP/IP configuration points to the 2000 server
    - Added 2008 server to the 2000 server domain as a member server
    - Ran dcpromo on 2008 server promoting it as an additional DC
    - Enabled GC on the 2008 server and triggered replication to synchronize AD
    - Disabled GC on 2000 server
-Transferred all 5 FSMO roles to 2008 server
    - Migrated file sharing from 2000 server to 2008 server
    - Point the 2008 server's Preferred DNS to itself
    - Changed workstations TCP/IP setting to the 2008 server.

So all users log into the 2008 server just fine. I thought my last step was to run dcpromo and demote the old server. Ran a quick test of unplugging the network cable from the old server and my troubles started.
I can't log into the 2008 server and the system log gives this message:

    Event ID: 1054
The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows could not obtain the name of a domain controller. This could be caused by a name resolution failure. Verify your Domain Name Sysytem (DNS) is configured and working correctly.

As soon as the network cable is plugged back into the 2000 server things go back to normal!

I'm also attaching the results from running the dcdiag command

    Stumped....

When you disabled the GC on the 2000 server did you allow it to replicate properly???

Can you please post an IPCONFIG /ALL from the 2000 and 2008 servers.

Did you install the DNS role on the 2008 server?

Have you run adprep /domainprep /gpprep as well? As you are migrating from Windows 2000 AD, you generally need to.

          Thanks for your replies.

Things just got worse. The 2000 server has gone dead!
The DNS role is active. The 2000 server has been replicating fine before I unchecked if from being a GC.

I've attached the results of the ipconfig/all.

Any suggestions as to where I could get tech support over the phone to help me with this problem. I'll need immediate response time not a 3-5 hour window??

            Thanks again!

The gateway is incorrect, other than that we can't tell if anything is wrong.

Have you looked at the DNS zone to verify it's there? have you run queries against the server to make sure it's responding to requests?

Have you checked the event log for errors?
