  • help of certificates

greetings! may I ask for guidance about certificates, especially now that i cant continue installing lync because i'm stucked with the certificate issue. I'm a newbie to this

    present set-up:

    server1
    dc, win2008r2, serv1.local
    192.168.0.200 - ip
    255.255.255.0 - sm
    192.168.0.1 - gateway (router)
    192.168.0.200 - dns
    server2
    exchange2010, mail.local
    192.168.0.201 - ip
    255.255.255.0 - sm
    192.168.0.1 - gateway (router)
    192.168.0.200 - dns
    server3
    lync2010, lync.local
    192.168.0.203 - ip
    255.255.255.0 - sm
    192.168.0.1 - gateway (router)
    192.168.0.200 - dns

    questions:

    1. can i use free ca for my set-up? if yes, where can i create and how can i install the ca?
    2. do i need to install ca for every server?
    3. in the future if i buy ca, where can i get one? how many, etc?

    thanks

    Re: help of certificates

you'll spend far more time screwing around, trying to work-around certificates that aren't issued by a trusted source than you will spend in costs of actually buying one.

    just buy them.

Lync will work fine with a MS CA. If its for a lab setup id advise that as a SAN certificate could be quite expensive. As long as its an Enterprise Domain joined CA enrolling the certificate is relatively straight forward. Just ensure you have all the domain names required by Lync such as Meeting,Dialin, etc. Domain joined CA's are automatically trusted by the clients.
You only require ONE CA in the same domain as your Lync server.
If you are going to do this in production then as already advised purchase a SAN certificate from a Public CA.

        Re: help of certificates

you have to import certificate in you Group Policy and all internal desktops should be fine. You need to install certificate authority on Server 2008 create a root, create an exchange cert and lync cert. Job done.
