  • Windows Update failure

On Monday I ran Windows updates on one of my servers (Win 2008 r2). Everything seemed relatively normal during the update process - right up to the point where I had to reboot.

When it rebooted, I was presented with a screen (prior to being able to logon) which said:

    Failure Configuring Windows updates
    Reverting changes

Googling this takes me to almost all win7 and vista sites. Just for grins, I've tried several of the suggestions from those sites, including:

Booting from an installation disc and using Repair to get a command prompt, then:
    (1) renaming c:\windows\winsxs\pending.sml to pending.old
    (2) deleting the files *.blf and *.regtrans-ms from c:\windows\system32\smi\store\machine\

Note that after allowing the computer to sit at the "reverting changes" screen for a few hours, it FINALLY did allow me to logon. I was then directed to look at \Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ for the ReportingEvents.log file where I found this:

    Code:

Any suggestions on how to get these updates to apply - preferably without toasting my server for 2 days?

    Re: Windows Update failure

Googling for 'updates error 80070643' talks about the most likely cause being problems with the .Net framework on the box being corrupted. If you don't have time to go back through the event logs, etc., to diagnose the specific event that trashed your box, the best recommendation I can think of is to rip .Net out completely, re-install 2.x and 3.5 from fresh downloads from MS, then let Updates re-apply what it needs to.

MS has a tool available to do a complete .Net removal, specifically for situations like this. I've had to do that a few times in my Srvr 2003 environment, but not lately. When I've gone to this extreme, it has always resolved things.

      Re: Windows Update failure

.Net is one of the updates (and I've had errors with .Net updates on other servers as well).

Question: would removing .Net and reinstalling like you say cause any problems for servers running either

Hyper-V (in a Failover Cluster group)
      DPM 2010

        Re: Windows Update failure

My experience with the 'repair' of .NET versions has only been on physical servers running Windows, or VMs under VMWare ESXi. Never tried it on a ESXi host, and have only just started 'playing' with Hyper-V for a tech refresh proposal. But I do know that services or applications that absolutely depend on .NET won't work until the re-install/possible reboot.

I also haven't had to re-install any apps that depend on .NET when I've done such a repair, but I may just have been lucky. But it has given me confidence to 'go for it' on more than one occasion, and I've had no regrets.

          Re: Windows Update failure

FWIW: when I reinstalled W2k3 on one of our servers I had problems applying Windows Updates. They were also due to a failure of the .net framework. I eventually had to use a custom tool to completely remove all traces of .net, then reinstall .net manually

          http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/arc...30/611355.aspx

I then downloaded and installed each of the .net versions and the updates. Took me two attempts, but it worked in the end.
