  • CAN DFSR Run on 2008 and 2003 servers in a 2003 domain?

    Afternoon,

We'll be putting a 2008 R2 server into a 2003 domain, adding it as a DC and then transferring FSMO roles over from the 2003 PDC.

The customer wants the DC to be a file server (yes, we've told him not to...), as well as having no down time for moving the files over.

We are planning on using DFS and DFSR to try and make the file migration seamless but are not sure if DFS and DFSR will be happy running on a 2008 and 2003 server, in a 2003 domain.

When the job is completed and everything is working as it should, the 2003 server will be decommisioned.

    Can anybody advise?

    Thanks

    Yes, it's possible:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/a...rver-2008.aspx
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...8WS.10%29.aspx

But when they say no downtime, what do they mean? You could use robocopy to seed the files. The on the cutover day, after hours you can do a final copy and change the drive mapping. When users login in the morning they won't know the difference. I'm just thinking that it might be easier than setting up DFS...

Just throwing that out there since, even when using DFS, you'll have to change the client paths at some point.

Thinking ahead, there is some justification for setting up DFS even on a single server, as it allows expansion to multiple servers or server moves later without any issues like remapping drives.

I am actually using DFS Replication in combination with the NameSpace in mixed 2003R2 2008R2 and 2008 server environment. So, what you could do is, setup DFS Replication Group(s) and NameSpace and add both servers, network shares etc. while both servers still online. In the login script use variables instead of single server name so users can authenticate to either one of DCs. In the login script change your mappings to point to a NameSpace instead of a single server. For example \\domainname.net\UsersData\SharedFolder.
That way, after initial replication is done you can remove either server w/o any downtime for users.
