  • How to implement Active-Active Cluster using Windows Server 2008 R2 MSCS ?

    Hi,

I have just configured active passive cluster (By default when creating 2 Node MSCS) in my Windows Server 2008 R2 which is currently hosting my custom web application, however is there any way to make my 2 node to be active-active ?

I have tried to telnet into the port using MSCS FQDN and it works as well as each respective node name with the same port.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

There is no real ACtive/Active Clustering in MSCS.
It can be done, but both will running a single instance of a process whereby they are each others failover.

At least this is how I read it: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc767156.aspx
Active/Active: In Active/Active mode, both nodes are allowed to have varying workloads and applications residing on them. They each perform work independent of the other, with instances of those applications setup for Failover/Failback residing on both nodes.

Dumber thanks for the advice, however after reading that article, I found out that I can/should deploy Windows NLB (multicast) with Standard Edition instead as opposed to MSCS with Enterprise edition.

Well yeah, NLB is kinda a different story.

Clustering uses shared resources and is basically a failover of a certain service, eg Exchange or SQL and stuff.

Windows NLB uses a VIP address where you connect to. Both systems are able to respond and if one breaks, there is still no problem. At least, maybe in the performance yet still reachable.

It depends a bit on the requirements and what you're trying to achieve.
