  • Error While Attempting to Access a Windows Share

While attempting to connect to a Windows share you receive the error:
    Windows cannot access \\{target machine name}
Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network. to try to identify and resolve network problems, click diagnose.

    1. I have used the correct target machine name
    2. Computer Browser Service is enabled and running
    3. On both the source and target machine, NETBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled
    4. I have drop to command line and issue the following two commands and Reboot the server:
    * netsh winsock reset
    * netsh int ip reset c:\temp\resetlog.txt

    All that Was not helpful...

    What else can I do?

    Thanks!

Re: Error While Attempting to Access a Windows Share

        you have a dns issue.

        1. Fix dns so you can resolve the hostname
        or

        2. map the share via ip instead.

Re: Error While Attempting to Access a Windows Share

well, you see, that wasn't stated in your initial post, so why the hell would I have any idea about that?

As to why it doesn't happen initially, no idea.

However, the fact that you cannot ping a hostname, but can ping an ip, tells me there is a DNS problem. It's incredibly simple really.

Re: Error While Attempting to Access a Windows Share

Lets step back a bit and do the following

              1. Ping the server by IP address. (ping 192.168.0.1)
              2. Ping the server by NetBIOS name. (ping server1)
              3. Ping the server by FQDN. (ping server1.mydomain.com)

You should be able to ping via IP as this doesn't require anything other than a working NIC.

NetBIOS name will require WINS or at the very least NEtBIOS over TCP/IP enabled.

FQDN would point to a DNS issue in my eyes.

Re: Error While Attempting to Access a Windows Share

                1. Ping the server by IP address => success
                2. Ping the server by NetBIOS name => success
                3. Ping the server by FQDN. (ping server1.mydomain.com) => success

I can access share only if I tap the IP address or the share.mydomain.com
I can't access share if I tap the share name without .mydomain.com

Can you please post an IPCONFIG /ALL from both an affected client and the affected server.

Re: Error While Attempting to Access a Windows Share

                      I found something interesting:
When I write down the name of the server with the name of the domain, I can access the Share (FQDN)

SO you have a problem with WINS or netbios name resolution
