  • Simple 2003 AD to 2008 R2 Migration steps

    Hello,

I am waiting for my new 2008 R2 64 T410 Server to upgrade an old 2003 Standard SP2 AD Server. We are running AD & DNS on 2003 and it is acting as our file server. 5 users. I would like to know the best and safest way to add the 08 and migrate the old 03. I will not be keeping the old box and there is no exchange, sharepoint, sql, etc. Am I better off just starting fresh and moving the 5 clients to the new server (they are running XP Pro) which would require takeing them off the old and recreating their profiles onto the new or is it better to just migrate the AD? I have done 2000 -> 2003 but not 2003 -> 2008. Will the 32bit/64bit OS difference create any issues? Can I find a step-by-step guide to achieve this goal? Any and all help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi,
If you want to migrate AD 2003 to 2008 then i will suggest you the following:

    1) Install a fresh OS (windows 2008 ) on your new Server.
    2) Promote the new server to domain controller,
    3) Migrate the users and passwords from 2003 AD to 2008 AD.

devil is close, but there's a bit more involved. I'm running a little late, but I'll post while I'm at work.

(at the moment it feels like i'm being paid to post on petri!)

Re: Simple 2003 AD to 2008 R2 Migration steps

        So:

You need to install your new server
Install the DNS role and AD roles on the new server
You need to run the domain and forestprep commands (adprep /domainprep ; adprep /forestprep ; adprep /gpprep) from the 2008 server cd
Then run DCPromo, and join your new server to the existing domain
Then you need to transfer the FSMO roles (plenty of google links on how to do this)
Make sure that the DNS information is replicating.
Make sure your DHCP server is moved to the 2008 server (or updated where necessary to use the IP address of the 2008 server and DNS)
Move any relevant files over to the new server (robocopy could help here)
shut the old server down for a week or two and make sure everything goes ok
then restart the old server and run DCPROMO to demote this server.
Shut it down, unplug it, throw it in the trash
        (or sell it on ebay..)

tehcamel is right but do he need to transfer the FSMO roles from the old DC to the new DC , as he is already installing AD from the scratch on the new server.

            Yes. TehCamel is correct.

Using the existing domain is a far, far simpler option than installing a new domain and using ADMT to migrate objects.

Oh sure, you could do it that way, but there's no real need.
