  • Open Files & Managed Sessions

There are 2 users on my system that have a very large number of open files, please see attached screen shot.
I know for fact that they haven't open those files, they logged off from the system and logged back in and the number is still high.

I was trying to do search on this forum and google it unfortunately i didn't find any information.

Is anyone familiar with this issue ?

Re: Open Files & Managed Sessions

I assume the users are connecting to shares on a server, but maybe it is terminal services?
What OS is on the clients and the server?
When you close the connections, what happens?
Is there anything unusual about the user accounts?
Is it a domain or a workgroup?
What roles does the server hold?

Basically, give us a few hints to allow us to try to help you

Re: Open Files & Managed Sessions

      Hi Tom,

      Forgot to provide this information.

I'm using windows 2008 R2 with roaming profiles, all of the profiles stored on the server Drive:\profiles (shared as profiles$).
All the workstations joined to a domain.local

The server is also a DNS server.
DHCP is being set by the router.

      No terminal services.

For some reason just those users have this prolem, also it takes some times to load those to profiles.

      Thank you!!

Re: Open Files & Managed Sessions

There are different shares on the server that are accessed by the users based on the group that user belongs to.

Re: Open Files & Managed Sessions

so is the issue with the profiles share, or are they accessing other shares too?
How is the profile being accessed -- UNC or mapped drive?
What client are the problem users on, and are the others on the same?

Re: Open Files & Managed Sessions

If you will look at the screenshot again 2 users out of 20 users have over 400k files open , it can't be as no user is opening so many files and they don't have an access to so many files.

Is there any more information i can provide ?

            Thank you,
            D

I must need new glasses again as I counted 10 digits in those open files and that makes some 4+ BILLION files open.

Have you tried hitting the Close All button and see what happens? Obviously make sure they are not working on any open document at the time. Also, what happens when these 2 Users logoff? Does the number of open files return to Zero, as it should, or do they still have the 4 billion open files?

Re: Open Files & Managed Sessions

I thought i answered all the questions already.

All the profiles are pointing to to D:\profiles$\%username%

There are few different mapped drives but i doubt it has something to do with the high number of open files.

I'm wondering if its a bug or its an issue with the profile and how can i check it.

                  Thank you,
                  D

Yes, but what was the result when you force closed the open files?

You really have to provide us with full and complete answers because we cannot see your machine so you have to either do a screendump or paint us a picture with words. Ta.

-Its roaming profiles setup, there is one folder configured for profiles, drive:\profiles$\%username%
                        - Its a domain setup
                        - Windows 2008 R2 for server
                        - Windows 7 pro for all of the workstations.
                        - Nothing unusual when you close, sometimes it takes a bit longer to open the account and sometimes it doesn't open at all, you have to log off and login again.
Same high number of open files will be seen but the user will be able to login.
User folder is not big, ~ 250mb.
                        - The server operates as ;
                        Domain Controller
                        Dns
                        AD
