  • Domain and Child Domain Issue

    Hi guys,
i recently installed a new child domain controller at a remote site everything seemed okay until i got back to the main site where the parent domain is i am unable to ping the parent domain from the child domain but i can ping the child from the parent.

if i go to active directory sites and services and try and add the site it is unable to find the domain controller (child domain)

    does anyone have any ideas?

both servers are windows 2008 r2 64bit im not sure if im posting this in the correct thread.

    thanks in advance

Re: Domain and Child Domain Issue

    Hi,

Most likely it's dns misconfiguration issue. Make sure you have forwarders in child domain dns pointing to Parent.
    Thanks & Regards

      *** Localhost can't find test1.domain: non-existent domain

Re: Domain and Child Domain Issue

        Hi,

You don't need to create forward lookup zone. Use Forwarder. Properties of DNS Server, Forwarder Tab.
        Thanks & Regards

Re: Domain and Child Domain Issue

          Hi,
that seems to work i can now ping the parent from the child but.....

when i try and add the site to sites and services the site adds but doesnt display the NTDS settings

also alot of the DNS settings seem to be missing compared to my other child domains at other locations

it appears the domain has become its own forest and doesnt think its a child domain is there any way of fixing this without re dcpromoing?

          thanks in advance

Re: Domain and Child Domain Issue

              Hi Guys,
it appears that dcpromo on the server was either incorrectly setup or it failed the server thinks its own schema master / domain naming master.

as you can see if we compare it to my other domain controllers im not sure if there is any way to fix this other than un dcpromo it and re do it ;/

              Working Child:

              SOUTHAMPTONDC
              The command completed successfully.

              C:\Users\Administrator>netdom query fsmo
              Schema master maindc.domain.local
              Domain naming master maindc.domain.local
              PDC SOUTHAMPTONDC.southampton.domain.local
              RID pool manager SOUTHAMPTONDC.southampton.domain.local
              Infrastructure master SOUTHAMPTONDC.southampton.domain.local
              The command completed successfully.

              Non Working Child

              C:\Users\Administrator>netdom query dc
List of domain controllers with accounts in the domain:

              WISHAWDC
              The command completed successfully.

              C:\Users\Administrator>netdom query fsmo
              Schema master WISHAWDC.wishaw.domain.local
              Domain naming master WISHAWDC.wishaw.domain.local
              PDC WISHAWDC.wishaw.domain.local
              RID pool manager WISHAWDC.wishaw.domain.local
              Infrastructure master WISHAWDC.wishaw.domain.local
              The command completed successfully.

Re: Domain and Child Domain Issue

It seems like you got two different ad forest. By namespace it doesn't appear to Parent-Child

Parent-child namespace will be something like this

                consoto.com [parent]
                sales.consoto.com [child]
                Thanks & Regards

Re: Domain and Child Domain Issue

Yes, you need to restructure it again by removing the domain and recreating it as child
                    Thanks & Regards
