  • Disk Performance problems on server

I have a server with the following specs:

    Windows Server 2008 Ent SP1 x86
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.8 GHz
    2 GB RAM
3x WD20EARS 2 TB drives (SATA) formatted as NTFS

I have a device called the Xtreamer (http://xtreamer.net/xtreamer/overview.aspx) which is connected to the server via a 100 Mb/s router.

The Xtreamer (Xt) reads all movie and music files from Windows shares on the server and plays them on the TV via HDMI.

I've had the Xtreamer (Xt) for 12 months now and only recently when I play a movie on the Xt I am seeing intermittent pauses. I have run Reliability & Performance Monitor and found that the pauses occur at the same time as the disk Active Time goes 100%. When the same counter then drops, it seems the movie continues playing.

My question is how do I determine what is causing the disk usage spikes and what changes can I make to the server's OS so that it servers files with less disk activity.

I know the server is of an older variety but it has been really good til now and nothing has changed on the server either hardware or software. I even reloaded the OS with the same issue occuring. Thanks.

Re: Disk Performance problems on server

    Are your drives RAIDed?
    What controller are they on?

Have you tried more RAM in the server?
Have you defragged recently (and how fragmented are you)?

btw, you really should be at SP2 by now

      Hi,

Can you provide info for Physical Disk > Disk Bytes\sec

and if you have AV then set exclusions for that folder.
      Thanks & Regards

This is the performance monitor output in graphical format showing where the video stalled twice:

Any chance of an answer to my questions above, or shall we keep guessing?

Re: Disk Performance problems on server

Thanks guys. The drives are standard SATA drives in no RAID setup running off standard SATA ports & controllers located on the motherboard. It's an old server with not too many frills.

I will increase the server's RAM this weekend and also schedule a CHKDSK on all drives. I have a feeling that the problem may be related to video files with high bit-rates but I'll keep testing. Thanks.

                Hi,

                Hi,

can you check what is the thru put of your disk and compare with the disk is giving you right now by Physical Disk > Disk Bytes\sec counter.

Also you can check for I/O read write byte Operations under taskmanager, add coloumns. To find out which process is writting heavily to the disk.
                Thanks & Regards

do you have the possibility to stripe over more disks then the current config?

Given post #7 above, I guess he cannot

Also major risk of data loss with striping (RAID 0) on an "older server"
