  • GPO Roaming Profile

    Hi guys,

I go strait to the question as i am totally lost...

Im trying to configure Roaming Profile for users in a specific Group.
    Two thing i found were:

"Add the Administrators security group to the roaming profiles"
"Set roaming profile path for all users logging onto this computer"

I know i can configure it in AD on the user but there are alot of users...I would like to have all users in a specific group to store their profile on the fileserver.

I have tried loopback but have not been successful so i need expert assistance from you guys

    Can anyone help me?

    Kind regards
    Robin

      Re: GPO Roaming Profile

I don't think that setting is available through GPO, it doesn't makes sense. In GPO you have settings that are found in the user's profile on a specific machine (those user-related settings, that it is).
What you are trying to change is a property of the User Account object in the AD, it has nothing to do with the local profile.
The only way I can see you can change that setting for a large number of users is with a VBS script, like this one:

      Code:
      On Error Resume Next

      Dim objUsers
      Dim objMember
      Dim strNewProfilePath

      Set objUsers = GetObject _
      ("LDAP://ou=[YOUR OU],dc=[FQDN NAME]")

For Each objMember In objUsers ' go through the collection
         strNewProfilePath = "\\[servername\share]"
         objMember.Put "profilePath", strNewProfilePath
         objMember.SetInfo
      Next
Beware: I did not tested this script! I wrote it in five minutes putting together few sources, so I didn't even dry-run it for errors. Test it before use ! I take no responsibility for damages you might do by using this script as it is...

        Re: GPO Roaming Profile

We run Windows 7 on the clients and windows server 2008 on the servers (not R2).

Sadly i run a swedish version of Windows 7 so the text might not be that good of use to you =/

However i can see when running gpresult /V that it say: (im translating the text)

The following GPOs were not applied because they were filtered out.
*policy name* Filtering: not applied (empty)

do you guys want me to post the policy too?

        Kind regards
        Robin

PS sorinso, I will try this if all other ways fail

            Re: GPO Roaming Profile

That is a computer setting and it'll apply to all the users logging to that computer including any local users if in use.
Try to use a different method and edit the profile on the user object instead either manually or script it as suggested by Sorinso.

              Re: GPO Roaming Profile

I was going to wait for the outcome of your tests, Camouflage, but L4ndy raised the same issue I was thinking of: if you do that change through GPO, it will be bound to a specific OU. If the change is not well documented and you or someone else in the future will change the user's location to another OU, you might encounter some very unpleasant situations when your user will not find it's profile.
It is something you should take in consideration when you choose how a setting/change is applied on any kind of AD object.
