  • file sharing "hand" missing?

I have a server 2008 R2 box setup, and I shared several folders using advanced sharing, and I do not see the "hand" under the shared folders. I have confimed that the folders are being shared. Is there anyway to restore this functionality?

No, Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom , decided to change it. In the same way they changed disabled user accounts in ADUC to something impossible to spot with the naked eye

You are not alone in your problem and this thread suggests some solutions -- 3rd party or reg hacks -- use both at your own risk:

Damn... I don't work a lot with file servers but removing the hand icon which exist at least since 1996 (the year I went to my IT study and the release date of Windows NT 4) is a really stupid decision. Using net view or the shares mmc isn't a workaround for a quick glance.

Not a whole lot of wisdom at the ms design team though.

You can change the icon for the SHARE to the little blue hand. I don't know why they changed that. Even the one on Server 2003 is a bit hard to spot. At least the bloody paperclip from Office was finally killed off though.
        1 1 was a racehorse.
        2 2 was 1 2.

Sure but if you just migrated 1000 ore more of shares it isn't really convenient to change the icon.

OP doesn't mention a SHARE number. If you did have 1,000 then I am sure Remco could script the icon change very quickly. I just wish I had his ability to do that. Click image for larger version
