  • KMS Server Pointer

    Hello everyone...

    We have recently be migrating from physical Windows 2003 servers to Virtual Windows Server 2008 servers. We finished 25 Windows 2008 servers and each one we activated the server by pointing to Microsoft with the VOLUME_KMS_C license we purchased. I guess this was wrong. All 25 servers registered fine with MS, but when I tried to register our latest four servers it fails and will not register.

    So on Friday we installed KMS on one of our Windows 2008 Servers. I was able to point three of the four new servers to the internal KMS server. However, now I am having a hard time figuring out how to point the first 25 servers to the internal KMS server and not microsoft. Currently the KMS shows Current Count 3 and Licensed.

    On the other 25 it shows licensed, but it is to Microsoft.

    Any ideas would be helpful.

    Thanks

    Stolen from someone else.
    Code:

    Dim WshShell
    Set Wshshell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

    objCmd1 = "%systemroot%\system32\slmgr.vbs -upk"
    WshShell.Run objCmd1, 0, True

    objCmd1 = "%systemroot%\system32\slmgr.vbs -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx"
    WshShell.Run objCmd1, 0, True

    objCmd1 = "%systemroot%\system32\slmgr.vbs -skms kms.yourdomain.wan"
    WshShell.Run objCmd1, 0, True

    objCmd1 = "%systemroot%\system32\slmgr.vbs -ato"
    WshShell.Run objCmd1, 0, True

    Set WshShell=Nothing
    Change the RED items to configure it for your location. KMS Server and your VLK.

      Re: KMS Server Pointer

      That does not seem to work.

      It seems like each of the 25 servers thinks it is a KMS server and the -skms option is not available and errors out.

      The -upk runs and says it removed product info.

      I am not sure about running the -ipk on the servers as that is telling it to install the product key again.

      This is very frustrating and I need to get these new servers in production.

        Did you install KMS on only 1 machine?
        Was it a standalone or a DC?

          Re: KMS Server Pointer

          I got it to work.

          I was entering my KMS key in the -ipk script. We found that this should be a public key from the Microsoft website. Once we stuck that key in all the script commands worked.

          Thanks
