  • change default profile folder on win 2008 R2 TS

    Hi,

We have a windows 2008 R2 terminal server in a windows 2003 domain. When a user logs into the terminal server their profile is created under c:\Users.

I would like to move the profiles to d:\Users. I have tried going into the local group policy editor (on the TS server) and change the "set remote desktop services user home directory" enabled and set it to location to local machine. The path is "d:\Users" (without quotes)

Does anyone know if this should be working or if I need to make the change in another location?

    Thank you for any help.

IIRC there is a registry setting needed to redirect the users folder (I had to do that with TS2003 a long time ago)
This is nothing to do with "home directories"

Try for now -- I will investigate later

I have found the registry key that needs to be changed. It is.
        \\HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Profilelist\{SID}

I changed the drive letter and it is working now. It does not make it the default but it works after I copy the folder to the new location. Not sure how to make this the default setting though.

        Thanks for the tip.

I think it is the same place:
          HKLM\Software\microsoft\windowsNT\currentversion\P rofileList

Change the "ProfilesDirectory" key and (assuming you have moved it) the "Default" key as well

Yes, Ossian is correct, that is the directory.

            http://therealshrimp.blogspot.com/20...n-of-user.html

Its the same as in 2003, except instead of docs & settings its D:\Users

This is how we have all of our 2008 R2 TS's set up, with their own dedicated profiles drive. Works fine.

Changing the registry key alone didn't work for me - it kept saying that it could not load my profile because it could not find the associated folder. I found one additional step was needed: restart the User Profile Service. Also, make sure each user has full control access to their new profile folders.

Holy thread resurrection, Batman.... this must be a new record! Thanks for the update. (mind you, in the dim, distant past of 2010, a reboot was probably assumed somewhere in the process)
