  • migration from windows server 2000 to windows server 2008 r2

I am faced with the task of migrating my network from a windows 2000 server to a new machine running windows server 2008 r2. I would like to "bring over" as much as I can, including the dns. I understand I need to demote the existing dns and promote the new dns. Not sure how this should take place. This is just one concern out of many on my list.
Does anyone have a step by step for migrating from a 2000 server to a 2008 r2? Again, these are two separate machines.

you can use transitioning. Promote the new server to a DC, make it a dns server. For more details use google.

      l4ndy is spot on.

simply install the new server, install dns on it.
promote it as a Dc, let it replicate.
      transfer the master roles.
      demote the old server.
      increase the domain functional level.

      sorted.

Run adprep on the old DC before promoting the new server.

As an aside... with 2000 being 32-bit only and 2008 R2 being 64-bit only... I wonder if you can get 32-bit versions of adprep for it...

And don't forget to switch your domain level to windows 2000 native.

The R2 disk does come with 32-bit versions of the relevant files. Standard 2008 does not, I've been carrying a 32-bit eval DVD around for a while to make sure I don't get caught out with this.

I know the question was about 2008 R2, just being my usual pedantic self.

ah. that's right. I remember having to run around in a mad scramble to find it one evening for a client deployment... :P
