  • Change Functional Level 2003 to 2008

    Hi All,

    Need your help,

Our environment is using Windows 2008 R2 Server as AD. And currently functional level still using Windows 2003.

We also have Ms Exchange 2003 on Windows 2003 Server.

We plan to change the functional level from 2003 to Windows 2008 R2.

Is there any impact to our exchange if change from 2003 to 2008R2?

    Thank you.

    Venmii

I can't confirm either way if it would have an impact but I can suggest the following.

Make sure you have a system state backup before doing so.
Consider whether this will give you any extra functionality that will actually give real benefits.
Test this in a virtual environment by carrying out a P2V of your current one for test purposes.

Note also that the process cannot be reversed, and that if your Win2008 DC is removed, you will not be able to use a Win2003 DC in its place. You must use a Win2008 DC when the functional level is at 2008.

Are there any specific features of the higher functional level you really need?
If not, leave well alone -- you can increase it later, but never roll it back

Re: Change Functional Level 2003 to 2008

          Dear All,

the reason we plan to raise functional level from 2003 to 2008R2 is to activate recycle bin on AD.

Because currently the recycle bin feature still not active.

A few days ago, someone deleted user and we need to prevent this is not happen again in the future. But to activate the recycle bin, it seems we have to raise functional level from 2003.

          Thank you.

Exchange Server 2003 with SP2 is supported in an AD domain at W2K8R2 domain and functional level.

will enabling Recycle Bin work if you only have 2003 DCs running ?
