  • I Need Help on How to Migrate Windows Server 2008 Standard from 32-bit to 64-bit

Some days ago I decided to upgrade the RAM of my Windows Server 2008 DC from 4GB to 8GB. This is why I need to migrate the OS from 32-bit to a 64-bit one. Is there some easy way to do it except of installing everything from the scratch? It is quite difficult for me to shut-down the LAN until the new 64-bit Win2K8 DC is ready to operate. I would be very glad to have a step-by-step guide. Has someone among you already made similar upgrade/reinstallation like I wish to do it and provide that guide?

    Thanks!

Do you have other servers that can become temporary DCs?

I have another server running Windows 2000 Server OS. I am afraid it cannot become a temporary DC for an Windows Server 2008 AD, can it?

        Not really, unfortunately...
How about a spare PC which you can install the trial of Server 2008 on?

OK, I understood I definitely need another PC. What if I had one? Is this what I have to do? Please correct me, if I am wrong.

          1)
I will configure this spare PC as a ReplicaDC with Windows Server2008 OS in an existing domain.

          2)
After successfull replication I will test if the Replica DC provides all services needed. If it does, I can proceed to the next point.

          3)
I reinstal the Windows Server 2008 to be a 64-bit OS.

          4)
I migrate the AD from the Replica DC to Win2K8 64-bit DC.

          5)
I check if the Win2K8 Server 64-bit OS is operational as a DC. If so, I am finished.

Only missing step is to decommission the additional DC
