  • Active Directory upgrade from Server 2003 - Server 2008 R2

Our organization presently has a 2003 domain and we are currently looking into upgrading to 2008 R2. I have done some research on the upgrade and would like some input on if any of the following services will be broken during the upgrade. We have 2 sites. I purchased a new server that I will be installing 2008 R2, and introducing it into our environment.

Domain functional Level is Windows 2000 mixed
Forest Functional level is Windows 2000

    Domain Controllers:

    Server1 - Server 2003 STD SP1
FSMO Roles - RID,PDC,Infastructure,Domain Naming, Schema Master
    Services - DNS,DHCP,BES 4.1, SQL 2000,GC
    Location - 1

Server2 - Server 2003 STD no Service pack
    Services - Exchange 2003 SP2, GC
    Location 2

Server 3 Server 2003 STD no service pack
    Services - DHCP,DNS,GC
    Location 2

We also have an NT member server in our environment that runs file maker for archive purposes. Will this box be affected?

    Services on other member servers.

    SharePoint Portal Server 2003
    Windows SharePoint services 2.0
    Microsoft Navision 4.0
    File Maker pro 6
    Citrix Metaframe XP 1.0
    Sql Server 2000
    Sql Server 2005

I will be moving Server one to location 2 here shortly, so the new server will be placed at location 1 only has a GC for now until I purchase a new server for location 2.

I am planning on preping the domain tonight. Do i need to raise these function levels to 2003 in order to extend the schema to 2008. I don't have any NT or 2000 DC in place.

functional Level is Windows 2000 mixed
Forest Functional level is Windows 2000

I have also came across several articles that state Exchange 2003 will not function in a domain with server 2008 DC.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
