  • Login screen missing any options!

    Hi folks,
We have a little problem with one of our 2008 servers.
It was working fine, unfortunately it has decided that we are no longer worthy of being able to log into it!

When the login screen comes up, we get the "Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to unlock this computer" message. When we press c+a+del, we are met with the following screen:

As you can see, we are missing the button that normally shows the last logged in user. Worse, we are missing the switch user option so we can't specify any credentials!

Luckily, we have LogMeIn installed and when LMI detects a login prompt it offers to log you in with the credentials you connected to LMI with and this works.

My best guesses so far are:

    1) The LMI drivers may be causing problems, however we can't afford to uninstall LMI and loose access entirely.

    2) The server is connected to an SBS 2003 domain. The SBS domain is fully up to date and running at 2003 funtion level. The 2008 server is not running Active Directory or anything to do with the domain. It is running a self contained CRM app (vTiger) that uses its own database engine and web server.

Any suggestions short of rebuilding the machine?

    Few queries on this ----

    1. What happens if you press the cancel button
    2. if you try to boot it in safe mood does this work?
    3. is this happening only in console login or even in RDP sessions ?

feels like a performance issue. I've seen similar things before.
check performance monitor.. also - have u tried to reboot, and how long has this problem been occuring ?

The cancel button takes you back to the press c+a+del screen
        Safe mode works ok.
It happens on all sessions, console or rdp

The machine has been rebooted several times. It is a HP ML110 that is less than a few months old. CPU usage is minimal and there's plenty of free memory so we've not seen any performance issues at all.

What we have seen was that the server was initially set up with hardware SATA raid on an adaptec card. The array for some reason separated itself out into two separate logical drives so we are now running on a single hard drive.

If we can fix the login issue we will rebuild the array otherwise if we have to rebuild the OS we'll do that at the same time :/

what happens if you try and use the iLO on the HP server, and go in via the console, do u get the same symptoms ?

Ok..that means is it caused by some startup driver...if you wish you can use "autoruns" from sysinternal and see what are all the services and programs starts when the system boots in normally. You need not to install this just copy and launch the utility..check for any suspecious services or programs in the startup. If you are able to login using safe mode then most probably its a program or service which is causing this activity.

You may also use msconfig in safe mode to check the startup items but autoruns provide you a more clear visibility on the program location & directories.

Do let me know if this works.

The 110s don't have iLO unfortunately. They're a cut down intel machine. Realistically they're more like a desktop but built on more reliable hardware.

This is what I suspected with the LogMeIn driver. I've just taken the chance and uninstalled LMI whilst connected remotely through another service. Lo and behold all the login items reappeared.

So it look like LMI is the culprit and uninstalling it makes the problem go away. We only install LMI as a backup so that we don't get locked out of things and I guess this is one case where we'll make do without!

              Thanks for the suggestions.
