  • AD 2000 to AD 2008 upgrade - PLEASE HELP!

    Hello All,

I am tasked with upgrading our current windows 2000 AD to Windows 2008 AD. We need to keep the same server names. Now as far as i am concerned and the research that i have done, i thought i could not do a direct upgrade from 2000 to 2008. That i had to do an inplace upgrade. Meaning upgrade our 2000 to 2003 and then to 2008. Am i correct?

But, my manager claims (and will not budge from her position) that a direct upgrade can be done and to figure it out. We have already ordered new hardware and have already installed sever 2008 on them, but have not done anything else.

so my question is how to ugprade AD2000 to AD2008, keep the same server names and same domain.

    thank you

ok after doing further research, i am even more confused.

I found this here which states that all i have to do is prep my 2000 domain and i can install 2008: http://www.petri.com/windows-server-2008-adprep.htm.

But then microsoft says that it is not support here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...8WS.10%29.aspx

so what am i do to? Can i do a direct upgrade to 2008 as some have claimed that they have done? Please help!

The Petri article is correct. The MS article actually says that in-place upgrade is not supported but other methods are, ie transitioning (Adding a 2008 DC in the existing 2000 domain)

OK so i will upgrade my current AD 2000 to AD 2008. But how do i make it where i keep the same server names? I do apologize if this is a stupid question. I just dont want to mess anything up.

You see my current servers are as follows:

        AD 2000
        Name of server
        server 1 (DC): PriDC1
        server 2 (DC): SecDC2

        New replacement servers on 2008:

        AD2008
Server 1 (DC): i want the name to be the same as PriDC1
Server 2 (DC): i want the name to be the same as SecDC2

How do i migrate DC(s) to 2008 and still keep the same name?

        thank you

You could take a two step approach:

          1. Upgrade the current domain from W2K to W2K3.

          2. upgrade the W2K3 domain to W2K8.

As far as keeping the same names for your servers you'll have to stage it.

Build your 2 new servers with new names.

Have all 4 servers as Domain Controllers in your 2008 environment.

Now, this is purely me thinking out loud but I would

            Step 1
Use DCPROMO to demote SeDC2 to a member server.
If any errors are generated then use NTDSUTIL do perform a metadata cleanup of SeDC2.
Check all SRV records have been removed from DNS
Also check SeDC2 has been removed from Sites & Services

            Step 2
Rename SeDC2 to something else, or power off is the hardware is no longer required.
Delete the SeDC2 computer account from AD
Wait for replication or force replication at this point

At this point you still have 3 active DCs in your domain.

            Step 3
Perform Step 1 on one of the Domain Controllers on the new hardware

            Step 4
Rename the server SeDC2 and reboot
DCPROMO SeDC2 back to a Domain Controller

            Force another replication cycle.

Follow the complete sequence again for PriDC1.

Hope that all makes sense, as I said I am purely thinking out loud so it may need a little refinement but you get the general idea.

            Good luck.

Re: AD 2000 to AD 2008 upgrade - PLEASE HELP!

I setup the whole scenario in my test lab. This is what i did and please correct me if did something wrong:

              1) Built another 2008 server. Added it to the domain as a normal member server.
2)Used robocopy on the new member server to copy all the files off of DC2 (it copied all the files, but i dont see any permissions being retained, also it placed the files all over the place and not in a specific directory, please advise).
              3) I then copied all the FSMO roles off of DC2 to DC1. Ran dcpromo, but in the process received DNS errors. Although it demoted successfully, i had lots of DNS erros.
              4) Shut down DC2. When i checked DC1, i still see entries in DNS for DC2, is that OK?
              5) renamed new member server to DC2 and ran dcpromo

How do i remove all entries within DNS for old DC2, also will i need to delete the DC2 objects manually? Shouldnt dcpromo have taken care of all this?

Also, how do i retain all the files and shares ntfs permissions when copied over via robocopy?

              thanks,

Is there any reason you wanted to keep the same name in the first place?
                For Robocopy see
                /
COPY:copyflag[s] :: what to COPY for files (default is /COPY: DAT). (No space after /COPY: )
                (copyflags : D=Data, A=Attributes, T=Timestamps).
                (S=Security=NTFS ACLs, O=Owner info, U=aUditing info).
