  • 2003 and 2008 domain controllers together?

    Hello everyone,

we have a Windows 2003 AD forest with a root domain (say root.com) and a child domain (say child.com), all Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard.

"Child.com" has two DCs, and we must to add a third one (on a remote site).

    My questions are:
    1. is it possible to install the third DC with Windows Server 2008, leaving Windows 2003 on the the first two? ("mixed" DCs, at least for some time)
    2. What about the parent domain? ("root.com") Can it stay Windows 2003 or would it need upgrading to 2008 too?

Thanks a lot to anyone willing to help.

    Ax

DCs dont have backward compatibility.so u may install but for greater performance and compatibility for replication purposes i suggest you to upgrade the root to windows server 2008

I'm not sure what you mean by "backward compatibility", but a W2K8 DC will live happily in a domain and forest that's at the W2K3 level.

            Thanks all.
I meant, is there not any problem to have a (remote) 2008 DC? Should I upgrade the schema or prepare my (home) 2003 DCs first, or there is no need to do it?

              there s not any...go ahead ....
the remote must have the version lower than that of the global catalog

This is the problem. The remote (2008 ) will be a higher version than the GC (2003).

You need to upgrade your schema on your root domain using the ADPREP from the R2 disk first then you can start installing new 2008 DC's.

Don't install a 2008 DC onto the netowrk until you have prepped the schema.

True as welluieb1 said -- you can extend the schema and then place 2k8 server in the remote site ... it should go well ....
