  • New Windows Server 2008r2 configuration questions

    Hello,

    OS=Windows server 2008r2
    Mem= 4GB
    RAID 1 (250 B)

4-6 users/workstations (mixture of Windows XP, Vista & Windows 7)
note: there are no plans to have more than the 4-6 users for at least 2+
more years and these users will not need remote access to the server at
    this time
1 Application to go on server, along with files stored from app.

Network: Wireless router>modem>switch [server hardwired CAT5]

    Hi everyone,
I'm a Newbie here trying to determine best way to configure the new server and connect workstations.
This is a new server going into an environment that previously did not have one- this server that's been put in my hands to get up & running, needless to say I need Help!

    Things I've done:
    - I've completed the installation on the server
    - am at the point of the Initial Configuration. I've set the time, set
administrator password, changed name of server, set a static IP address,
    set auto updates.

    To Do:
    1. I need to know what is the ideal scenerio for this setup? Should I go
    w/a workgroup environment?
    2. Or should I set the server up w/ roles as: a domain controller, w/Active Dir,
    and file server?
I know it's not the best scenerio but it's what I have to work with right now.
    3. Install SP2 in the morning and re-run updates
    4. What are the steps I need to complete to get these workstations
connected to the server and accessing the application?

Hope I've given enough info. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: New Windows Server 2008r2 configuration questions

Personally I always would go for a domain.
    Have a look at SBS...

Re: New Windows Server 2008r2 configuration questions

Thanks Dumber for your reply. It only leads to more questions though.

SBS is not an option. They've already purchased 2008R2. Any thoughts on setting up the domain. I figured it would be a single domain. Can I get away with everything on this one server for about a year until more $$ becomes available for a separate server that can be setup as a domain controller? Or am I getting things mixed up with domain and domain controller?

Any basic steps you could send my way regarding the configuration? Once I have the steps I can research what's needed to complete each one.

      ie: 1- setup as AD??
      2- setup as domain controller???
      3- setup as file server??
      4- ???
      5- ???
      6- ???
      etc.

      Thanks,Jae

Re: New Windows Server 2008r2 configuration questions

        Hi,
If I am honest with you, the first step would probably be to get an IT Pro to set it all up for you and advise accordingly.
Buying the OS is only the tip of the iceberg, then you'll need to look into the licensing type etc.
For your needs, as Dumber said an SBS would have probably been your best bet.
Having someone in that knows what they are doing would probably save you some money in the long run.
        But in a nutshell,

1- Setup Active directory on the server (Inc DNS, DHCP roles)
2- Create User accounts, OU etc
3- Configure the clients to be members of that domain

And then the rest should follow
But As I said is not just a 1,2,3 job if you can't afford the time.

        Good luck

Re: New Windows Server 2008r2 configuration questions

Thanks L4ndy,Your info is what I was looking for. I'd already setup AD and the DC and am working on configuring the clients. I hadn't mentioned it but they had purchased 15 CAL's- so are set for licenses. I've got about a week to get this setup. I really appreciate both of your responses-I just needed a direction in which to go. I love challenges, I will let you all know how things work out. Regards,Jae

Re: New Windows Server 2008r2 configuration questions

No probs, come back here at any time with any other problems. Doing it the hard way is how most of us learn.
Some times though you need that extra expertise to get you started and It wasn't very clear in your post what your technical level was hence i suggested the IT pro.

            Good luck.

Re: New Windows Server 2008r2 configuration questions

              Update:

Wanted to let you know that I've got the server up and running. Only had one problem-forgot and put the IP address for DNS w/in the DHCP range. When corrected that all was well. Otherwise everything tested out good and apps are running great.

Thanks so much for the help.

              J~
