  • Demoting 2008 Domain Controller

I am attempting to demote a virtual full version of Windows 2008 DC but I am getting the below message. I have a non-virtual Windows 2003 DC on the network which I can ping from the 2008 Server.
    “The operation failed because:
A domain controller could not be contacted for the domain (name) that contained an account for this computer. Make the computer a member of the workgroup and rejoin the domain before retrying promotion.
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.”

The 2008 DC is displaying on the 2003 AD.
Any anyone advise me why I cannot demote this please?

What is the Forest functional level?
Is there proper trust relationship and are they part of the same domain?

      Re: Demoting 2008 Domain Controller

If you are just demoting it, why not just perform a metadata cleanup on the other DCs that you plan on keeping? This will remove this 2008 from the AD database and you will be free to rebuild him and do as you please with him.

      Hope this helps.
