  • Error compacting vhd in Hyper-V virtual disk wizard

    Hello all,

I am a new member on this forum so please let me know if I am not follwing "the rules".

When trying to compact vhd's with the compact option in the "Edit Virtual Hard Disk Wizard" of Hyper-V Manager.

I am running W2K8 R2 and all updates are applied.

The error: 2424869 occurs while truing to compact and vhd.
Some were created with Virtual PC and Virtual Server while others are new and created with the wizard itself.

Before I try to compact, I have defragged the vhd's and pre-compacted them.
At the time of compaction, the vhd's are not in use.

The message box displaying the error says:

The server encountered an error trying to edit the virtual disk.

'The system failed to compact 'filename'. Error Code: The requested operation could not be completed due to a file system limitation'

    Hope someone can help.

Hi Jan, just so you have some company, I'm facing the same issue. I am building base images, and like you, I defrag the vhd and then compact. It seems that the issue is not the underlying disk, but the vhd file itself - and this is not size related. The vhd's that are failing are a Win7x86 base image (~8GB) and a Win7x64+software image (~26GB). Strangely the Win7x64 base image (~9GB) works fine and continues to work fine. I tried moving the Win7x86 to different drives (some of which were basically clean) and ran into the same issue. A defrag of the drive holding the vhds does not help. It seems somehow that the vhd is corrupted and cannot be compacted.
