  • Samba connections time out over VLANs

I've spent this week migrating our system from NetWare to a Win2008 AD domain. The domain has been set up for about a year, and most users have been logging in dually, but the main filestore was on a Novell server.

Before I start, I've already tried net config server /autodisconnect:-1.

Anyhow, after some time, maybe 15 minutes or so, shares seem to time out or disconnect. There are no errors or other indications that this has occurred, but if you try to pull up a folder, the explorer process hangs for a good 45 seconds while it reconnects. Afterwards, folder browsing is lightning-quick.

This doesn't seem to happen if I browse the share from another server on the same VLAN. The servers are on a dedicated VLAN/subnet, so all the workstations have to hit the router, which I'm assuming is the main culprit here.

What could be causing this, and what can I do about it?
