  • how to run Server 2008 R2 as a DC in Windows 2003 domain

    Hi All,

I'm about to do the Domain Controller + DHCP and DNS role transfer from Windows Server 2003 Std. R2 SP2 into Windows Server 2008 Std. R2 SP 1, is there anything that i should be careful about ?

Here's the current AD Domain details:

Domain Functional Level: Windows 2000 Native (since there is Samba Server)
    • ServerA: DC + 1st DNS + DHCP (this will be decommissioned) - Windows Server 2003 x86 R2 SP2
    • ServerB: DC + 2nd DNS + All FSMO Role + Exchange Server 2007 SP1 - Windows Server 2003 x64 R2 SP2

I'm afraid if there is any incompatibilities in running Windows Server 2008 R2 with Server 2003 then I could not restore the Server A from backup image (Acronis True Image backup).

I shall performs the following commands on my Server B during the weekend since

    1. support\adprep>adprep32.exe /forestprep
    2. support\adprep>adprep32.exe /domainprep
    3. support\adprep>adprep32.exe /gpprep
it is too risky to run it during the working days since the schema modification sounds like a serious issue. Hopefully Exchange Server 2007 SP1 which is in Server B can still performs email transaction after the schema modifications.

up to this stage I've successfully install Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 8.5 on Server B in case something goes crazy, i can just restore the whole OS from the image.

    Cheers,

    Albert

You can run Windows 2008 DC's with 2003 DC's you just cant raise the domain function level to Windows 2008.

Here is a post i did on the whole process

I know there is an Issue with Windows 2008 R2 Only domain controllers, its an MS bug, so if your planning Moving to 2008 R2 only DC's wait for the Fix (not sur eif theer is a fix yet without calling MS)

you have 2003 DC with excange 2007 installed so your ok.

although i wouldnt personally have exchange installed on a DC.

Im not sure if after you upgrade to 2008 Schema you have to re run exchange forestprep or domanprep, i dont think so but this will be answered by someone im sure.

      Thanks for the reply ikon,

this new Windows Serve 2008 R2 will be serving as the DC + GC +1st DNS and DHCP only.

2nd DNS and all of the other FSMO role will still be held in Windows Server 2003 (Server B) for the sake of redundancy, while I performs restart on Server A, the email flow and DNS can still going. So if i transfer all FSMO role into the new Server 2008, If i restart it the Exchange Server will stop sending emails

Got any more on this, or is it in that thread ?
I need to know about this quick smart...

We're planinng on deploying 2x 2008R2 x64 DCs into what is currently a 2000 native forest, promoting them, then transferring fsmo, shutting down old gear and upping te functional levels...

you're suggesting this could be an issue ?

Appendix B: How to Upgrade Domain Controllers to Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2:

P.S.: restoring DCs from image in multi-DC environment is not supported and actually causes USN rollbacks. NEVER EVER do it.
