  • Cannot connect to Server 2008 admin shares from XP

I have two admin shares on the 2008 server, automatically created by the OS. I'm logged onto a WinXP SP3 notebook and trying to map a network drive to one of the admin shares, but WinXP keeps asking for a username and password.

Credentials are all correct and part of the Administrators group. The only way I can get this to work is to map using the Administrator credentials.

I've looked on the 2008 server Security log and it's telling me that the user is logging on OK with no problems.

I've tried logging on as "Julian" and "Server01\Julian". I can't understand how the server can authenticate the notebook user but WinXP will keep asking for the logon credentials.

If I create a default share, called "C" on the root of the C-drive, I can connect to it from the notebook with no problems.

    Server is Win2K8 SP1 Enterprise, non-domain (it's our test server) called "Server01".
    Client is WinXP SP3.

hold on.. my post isn't relevant. be back in a moment

based on the quick look i just had, "permissions for administrative shares cannot be set"
so i'd say the permission is administrator only, not the administrators group.

Yes, UAC is set up to not allow access to default shares remotely. To enable, set this key in the registry

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\system\LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy

0 - build filtered token (Remote UAC enabled)
1 - build elevated token (Remote UAC disabled)

By setting the DWORD entry to 1, you will be able to access the administrative shares since the remote logon token will not be filtered.

This is discussed in this KB article, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947232. (It's for Vista but it applies.)

WOW. Thanks for the speedy response. Appreciate the text. Is there a particular site which has all such changes which I can refer to in my testing? Thanks.
