  • Server 2008 x86 to 2008 R2

When R2 comes out we want to upgrade our 2008 servers to it.

At the moment we have Server 2008 x86 as the dc running all the usual dc stuff, dns, dhcp, gc and so on, but as you cant upgrade from x86 to x64 how would we do it?

Im figuring we would have to install a new server then promote it to a dc and then demote and remove the old one?

If we install the new server can we promote it then give it the old dc's name and ip address?

Im assuming we cant, but if we could it would save us from lots of reconfiguring.

You ask about installing R2, and then about converting from x86 to x64. Which are you trying to do - one or both?

No, you can't flatten the machine, reinstall the OS and create a new domain with the same name and DC hostname, and have everything 'just work'.

I was wanting to do both.

I knew it was a long shot, so what i will need to do it install r2, make it a dc and then remove the old one.

Yes, if you install a second DC, make it a DNS and GC server, and transfer the FSMO roles to it, you can then flatten the original DC and install 08 x64 on there.
