  • Domain Migration... not quite as planned

    Hi,

Today I installed a new Windows Server 2008 server to replace a dying Windows 2003 server. I set up the domain to support W2k8 using adprep, and used dcpromo on the new server to promote it to be a domain controller.

Annoyingly, just after the dcpromo had finished and the new server had rebooted, the old server finally gave up (and annoyingly took a hard drive with it).

Is there anything I can do on the new server to make it act as the primary domain controller? Does the server even have the whole domain's data on it, or do I have to just restore the backups from the old server?

    Thanks for your help.

When did the old DC die? Was it after DCPROMOing the new DC, rebooting it, and working with it for a while (i.e. replication has completed successfully)? Or did it die right when doing DCPROMO on the new would-be DC? If it's the second, then I'm afraid that unless you can restore the system state of the old DC and take it online, then you'll probably need to re-build the domain entirely.
    Cheers,
