  • Windows 2003 R2 Upgrade to 2008 (was: Server 2008 R2 Upgrade)

I am getting ready to upgrade from Server 2008 x86 to Server 2008 to take advantage of the Hyper-V features and x64 architecture for Exchange 2007. My only concern is that Windows 7 will be much easier to manage under Server 2008 R2.

Do we know if there be an upgrade path like Server 2003? I was able to download the 2003 R2 upgrade package and apply it to my existing DCs and servers without having to reload the OS.

I am not quite sure what you are asking but a couple of things to consider are:

The cross-platform upgrade (X86 - X64)is not supported by MS. and also
The R2 version of Windows 2008 is at a Beta stage at the moment and so is the intended Client OS (Windows 7).

      Re: Server 2008 R2 Upgrade

      Sorry - I mis-typed in the OP. I currently have Server 2003 R2 x86. I am going to migrate to Server 2008 x64.

      My question is this -

Will I be able to upgrade from 2008 to 2008 R2 by downloading the R2 update, or will it be a completely different OS than the original server 2008.

      Sorry for the confusion.

        Re: Server 2008 R2 Upgrade

There isn't much available yet about Windows 2008 R2 beta.
Also I wouldn't assume anything till it's released.
Everything can be changed between the beta and the final.

At the moment I expect that the upgrade path from Windows 2008 to Windows 2008 R2 would be somehow equal like Windows 2003 to Windows 2003 R2.
However don't pin me on that.
