  • dns setup on server 2008

Our first new server 2008 using HP DL380 with two NIC. We are moving from a peer to peer netowrk.
    1) Should both NIC's be set static on the server, and should they both be connected to the switch? Right now they are set static.

    2) nslookup on the server displays:
    Server: server1
    Address: 192.168.1.5

Enter any FQDN and it comes back correct.
On client XPP sp3 machines, nslookup comes back with :
    Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.1.5 and any FQDN local or WAN comes back correct. Clients are all set static, DNS and DHCP pointing to the server (192.168.1.5) and gateway to the router (192.168.1.1).

How do fix the nslookup on the clients, it should come back with Server: server1? What should I check on the server?

    Thanks.

    Is the machine a DC?
If yes, disable the second nic. Multihomed DC's aren't supported
Second, It sounds like you didn't create a reverse lookup zone.
Although you didn't need it for good working AD environement you still can create it.

Re: dns setup on server 2008

Thanks. I diabled one Lan port, now the server is on 192.168.1.5, DNS and DHCP point to itself.

Under Forward Lookup Zones there are two entries:
      _msdcs.company.local
      - under this is DC, domains, gc, and pdc.
      company.local
      - under this i can see all the computers with HOST A.

      Under Reverse Lookup Zones:
      1.168.192.in-addr.arpa
      Conditional is blank.

right click on Server1 in DNS Manager, I have the ISP DNS servers (two of them). Is that correct?

Now, on the server, I am getting:
      Server: unknown
      Address: 192.168.1.5

got can still get internal/external DNS resolution.

      What else can I check?

I don't have Netdiag.exe on Server 2008? Is it available?
I installed RSAT, and searched the whole drive, nothing.

          What should I do next?

Hmmm after searching around google I can't find netdiag for Windows 2008 eiter.
            oh boy....

            Ok,
restart the netlogon service, run ipconfig /registerdns restart the DHCP client.

This should also do the trick
