  • Creating new domain from server core ... how ?

    Hello everyone,

I am just started to study on MCTIP: Server Administrator and is curretnly reading book 70-640.

I have a question in how to create a domain from server core installation. in the exams book it told you how to join a domain with the following command:

    'netdom join %computername% /domain:contoso.com'

But when running it, it give an error saying there is no domain with the name contoso.com. I know there is no domain with that name because i just reinstalled my physical server with the server core installation and configured the IP information. It could be that the previous lesson was to install the normal version of 2008 and create domain contoso.com, but since i only have 1 server to play with i reinstalled it with this server core version..

Could someone explain if it is possible to create a new domain from server core and how to do it... cant seem to google it correct

    Regards,

    Ronnie

Thank you very much guys, nice reading... I will defiantely try this out later at see how it goes and then get back to you guys...

Just a quick question.... since i dont have a DNS server on my home network i assume that server core will install dns server when i use DCpromo command ? i saw the command installDNS=yes in a unattended installation file.... but would that not make the DNS ip the same as current server ip 10.0.0.11 ???

it would, but that is what you want since you got no other DNS server.
AD has to work with some kind of DNS , so installing a DNS on the server that would be also an AD would cause no problems, most DCs that ppl are implementing actually serve as DNS as well, or lets put it that way - Most DNS services that are Microsoft based run on a DC.
so Install the DNS , configure the server to point to itself (IP) in the TCP/IP -> DNS configuration and you are all set.

Ignore that netdom command, you only use if if joinging an existing domain. Run Dcpromo and select option to create a DC for a new domain. It should also detect if DNS is not available and it will prompt you to install that as well.
