because i have several databases that currently are on sql 2000.
and my new developers server is server 2008.

      can it be done?
or i need to upgrade to a newer version of sql?

No, SQL 2000 does not work on Windows 2008. You need either SQL 2005 or SQL 2008.
SQL 2005 Express will work - but its not as good as the full SQL.

              Thanks anyway

i'll just have to build another server with 2003+sql 2000 on it
