  • Migrating DHCP scopes from server 2003 to 2008

Title says it all, I am wanting to decomission one of our DC's that is running DHCP on server 2003 and migrate it to a server running 2008. Does anyone have any information on this or am i going to have to do it manually by scripting the reservations and the like?

looks like it would be the solution, anyone else tried this? I will be testing this out next week. If anyone else has done this please share your experiences.

Well I haven't played with Windows 2008 yet, but it was actually what I was thinking about.
Netsh is very powerful and I have to say, I used it quite a lot of times with migrating dhcp scopes and so.

Re: Migrating DCHP scopes from server 2003 to 2008

I can only tell you that I used the same method several times to move DHCP databases between different 2003 servers and it works almost flawlessly (I had to edit the TXT file holding the data in few occasions, because of some differences between servers).
Never did it with a 2008 server, but it doesn't look like it should be different.

          Sorinso,

What type of things did you have to edit in the text file to get it to work for you?

I will be testing this on Tuesday next week and will also report back with my findings.

Re: Migrating DHCP scopes from server 2003 to 2008

Well, if I remember right, one thing was the IP of the DHCP server itself. In other cases, I changed the scopes and the DHCP options to new values...
The exported data populate a TXT file. Take a look at it and you will understand quickly how it is done (after all, it is a bunch of netsh dhcp commands that are executed one after the other...)
            Good luck.

Re: Migrating DHCP scopes from server 2003 to 2008

Ok so the final workup on this:

              when I used

              Original 2k3 server
              Code:
netsh dhcp server export C:\dhcpcb all
              2k8 server
              Code:
netsh dhcp server import C:\dhcpcb all
I got an error message of:
              Error while importing option "81."
This option conflicts with the existing option "" Internal error occurred
Option 81 I believe is for DNS settings. So I tried playing around with the settings on the dhcp server side and never did get it to go so then I decided to try just the scope by using the following:

              Original 2k3 server
              Code:
netsh dhcp server export C:\dhcpcb 128.1.0.0
              2k8 server
              Code:
netsh dhcp server import C:\dhcpcb 128.1.0.0
Also as a side note I did find that you did not need to be a local admin as long as you are a domain/enterprise admin.

So far things appear to be looking good, if I have any issues I will report back with findings
