  • dcrpomo with excisting DNS server

    He,

    I normally like to install and configure the DNS server myself - call me oldschool

    I installed a Server 2008 Core server and applied the DNS rols and configured it accordingly .. Works like a treat ...

    Now I created an answer file with the following content :

    Code:
    [DCINSTALL]
    InstallDNS=no
    NewDomain=forest
    NewDomainDNSName=somedomain.local
    DomainNetBiosName=somedomain
    SiteName=Default-First-Site-Name
    ReplicaOrNewDomain=domain
    ForestLevel=3
    DomainLevel=3
    DatabasePath="%systemroot%\NTDS"
    LogPath="%systemroot%\NTDS"
    RebootOnCompletion=yes
    SYSVOLPath="%systemroot%\SYSVOL"
    SafeModeAdminPassword=somepassword
    and then run dcpromo

    dcpromo /unattend:c:\answer.txt
    While checking the environment it actually complains that it needs to have the DNS role removed ..

    I am almost sure I did it before, but I might had the DNS server on a different server.

    So is it not possible to dcpromo a server with the DNS server installed on the same server ?

    What I found is that if you manually install DNS before installing the AD-DC role, it will complain about removing it.

        Btw., it does seem to work when you run the DNS server pre-installed on a seperate server .. but it should still work when you want to promote a single server.
