  • General question...no gui?

Ok so I'm a bit behind on server 08. Well c'mon its still pretty new.
But from what I've read so far, I'm a bit concerned. So is this true...? If I install some server with say dhcp or dns only, (Core?) then it gives me ONLY a cmd line?? No gui for admin?? Well if so, then this seems kinda radical doesn't it? What has Windows been all along? A gui controlled OS. Why the sudden shift...are we to become cmd line experts overnight? This is not linux. Sure "some" cmd line utils are fine but for Windows server people... well no...not really ya know..? Anyone else bothered by this?

    Thanks.

What are you, an IT professional or what?

You work with the tools given you - and for me, Windows Server never NEEDED a GUI - it's just unnecessary bloat slowing your server down, heating it up, and making it necessary to buy hugely over-specced machines.

Windows Server 2008 Core is a separate installation type specifically aimed at certain functions; not the other way around. So - if you install Core, it will be perfect as a domain controller, DHCP server, DNS server etc. Absolutely no use whatever as a back-end SQL server, web apps server or an applications box.

Take a look at this screen:
