  • Manage WS2008 server core with CoreConfigurator

Most of you have probably seen this post:

Easily Manage Windows Server 2008 Server Core Settings with CoreConfigurator - http://www.petri.com/manage-windows-...nfigurator.htm

But in case you haven't and you think about introducing WS2008 server core machines, CoreConfigurator by Guy Teverovsky (fellow MVP and Petri.co.il admin) is the tool you need for the job.

Update: CoreConfigurator had to be taken offline due to legal issues.

He means using the CMD line to configure these options.

Obviously it's easier to use a GUI for configuring such tasks rather than having to remember several different commands.

Can you configure the servers IP address remotely via the MMC console?

You would also have to ensure port 445 is open on the server before you can use psexec. Not too sure if it's open by default

Personally I would find it easier and quicker to use a simple GUI to configure these settings and then use MMC / server Admin to configure advanced settings.

and no port needs to be open for this particular software?

thing is, I'm pretty used to having issues with windows and 3rd party software, so I try to keep it homogeneous.

Nevertheless, for those who can't (and we do take care of them too), there is this great, free and small tool (I almost wrote "gadget" ) here.

PsExec communicates with remote systems via port 445, which will need to be unblocked. (For this reason PsExec is easier to use in a LAN than over the Internet.)

No, it is to be installed locally on the Core Server.
It provides you a simple GUI-like interface, so you won't need to remember odd commands.
I suggest you read the article Daniel posted.

Re: Manage WS2008 server core with CoreConfigurator

DYasny, the tool was created in order to help those that cannot remember by heart the exact syntax for opening the FW for (for example) PING requests or for performing the activation, or for manually creating an answer file for DCPROMO and so on.

Sure, if you know it all by heart, you do not need this tool.

Sure, AFTER configuring the server's IP, name, domain membership, local users and groups, FW rules and so on, you CAN manage it remotely. This tool is inteneded to help you get to that point.

Don't want to use it? Fine with me, I couldn't care less. However, judging by the d/l rate, you're in minority here.
                            Cheers,

oh yeah, I didn't realise this tool is to be run on the core server itself and not remotely

btw, a WebMin version for 2008 is reportedly planned to come out, might be a useful.
