  • RAID Array says file or folder is corrupted and unreadable

We have 6 73gb SCSI disks setup in Windows 2003 Dynamic drive RAID 5 setup. After a few power failures and having to replace a drive, we are now at a point where disk management says the array is healthy. But F: in My Computer does not show its size or used totals and when you try to go into it it says:

file or folder is corrupted and unreadable

I have tried chkntfs and chkdsk. The first cant do anything and chkdsk is now at a point where it has fixed everything upto a point (Stage 2 of 3 Verifying indexes) and then says:

    An unspecified error occured

Can anyone suggest anything? Any recovery tools so we can get some or all of the data off it?

    Thanks in advance

Not sure in your case but i can remember reading somewhere about someone who did have issues with a drive not booting properly. They ran chkdsk /f from the recovery console and its worked perfect ever since.

        Worth a try imo.

Don't you have a backup of the data from the drive??

The drive isn't the bootdrive. Chkdsk will run from Windows but comes up with the error described.

Yes most of the data is backed up but there is folder or two that was never seen as important like a load of shortcuts for software used by staff. This has grown over time and is on that partition. It can be recreated but would take quite a few man hours.

Ok got a bit further. Chkdsk fixed more problems with indexes but again stopped with an unspecified error. I am running it once more before i go into the recovery console to run chkdsk from there.

            Any more suggestions welcome!

I thing I can think of at the moment is FSUTIL.
              1 1 was a racehorse.
              2 2 was 1 2.
              1 1 1 1 race 1 day,

Well we are a bit further!

After running chkdsk over and over and over again... it eventually got through all the indexes. It is now on stage 3 of 3 and is stating for virtually every file:

Recovering orphaned file ***.*** (number) into directory file (number)

It has been going about 6 hours and i think it is about 25% in but it does have about 300gb of data to go through!

                    Wish me luck!

This would speed it up a bit.

Thanks. It was just the folder called open which has a heck of a lot of shortcuts for software. I felt sorry for our helpdesk monkeys who would have had to recreate them all from scratch. Thats why i persisted.
