  • DNS Lookup Zone query

    Hi guys
    Quick query.
    >A Windows 2003 R2 Server runs DNS.
    >It has, say, 6 forward lookup zones, including the zone for the domain the server is part of
    >nslookup is run on the server
    >host names (not FQDNs) from the zone named after the domain can be resolved, as can FQDNs
    >host names from within the other 5 zones cannot be resolved, but FQDNs can.

Shouldn't nslookup by default search through ALL lookup zones to see if the relevant record is there?

And if so, what could prevent this from happening?

    Thanks
    JHH

    Re: DNS Lookup Zone query

I think that this is a normal answer from the Server because in the other domain there can be the same computername i think.

In order to achieve what you want, install WINS and configure it to replicate with the other domains.

When you are using NSLOOKUP it will always append the DNS suffix of the machine you are using unless you specifically add it.

      Example

      machine 1 is in zone1.local
      machine 2 is in zone2.local

you lookup machine2 from zone1.local, it will look for machine2.zone1.local because you have not specified what the FQDN is.
